Taking a negative and turning it into a positive, I decided to help others facing the same challenges we had in our relocation. Little did I know this dream would turn into a legacy for our family.
Our family made the big move from San Diego to Colorado, excited to start a new adventure together and experience a different lifestyle. One of the first things we realized was how few housing options there were for us. The market was very competitive, and it was hard to find a home. We didn’t want to sign a one-year lease in case we found our dream home, and hotels were too expensive.
We decided to live in a camper instead while we navigated the crazy Colorado market, hoping to find something just right for our family. What we thought would be a brief stay turned into 18 months of our family of four cramming into the camper. Although it was tight, we made it work and found the experience to be surprisingly positive. We had a beautiful view and met some really cool people who were also living the camper lifestyle.
After weeks turned into months, I started to feel like our home search was never going to end. We were on the verge of giving up and moving back to San Diego when a friend of mine mentioned her townhome that she was looking to sell. We bought it and started fixing it up – we have been doing fix and flips for 20 years. Real estate has always fascinated me, and I wasn’t afraid of a new project as we continued searching for our home.
Just months after buying the townhome, our dream home – a new build – came on the market, and we couldn’t miss the chance to buy. It’s funny how things happen when you least expect it!
With our new home, we decided to use the walkout basement as our first Airbnb. We were testing the waters and found great success with it. Our experience showed us that there was a real need in the Colorado market for flexible short-term rentals. Thus, Colorado Furnished Rentals was born. In the beginning, people didn’t understand what my vision was, but I believed in myself and the value I was adding to the industry.
We started scaling our business and adding more investment properties. People were attracted to my rentals because they were relatively affordable and offered amenities such as a full kitchen, washer and dryer, and a fenced-in backyard. It was perfect for people trying to relocate who faced the same problems we did.
As my business grew, I decided to get my real estate license, and my daughter, Alicia, joined me in the business at just 18 years old. We gave people an all-inclusive experience, offering comfortable housing as we searched together for their perfect property. In 2021, many buyers were putting in offers way over asking in attempts to stand out. My clients never had to do that because they already had comfortable housing through my rentals – it was the perfect win-win scenario.
Everything picked up so quickly that I left behind my teaching career to scale our business. My husband has also quit his job to help manage our rentals. Even my son, Gavin, at just 14, helps with the upkeep of our properties and has learned so many skills by doing maintenance work with his father. What was once a dream has turned into a source of endless opportunities for my family and me.
Alicia has attended Masterminds with top industry leaders and has more firsthand business experience than most 21-year-olds. As Gavin gets older, I know he will continue developing his own path within our business. The legacy we have built is perhaps the greatest reward of this journey.
This is a family-owned and operated business that we all are passionate about. It has transformed our lives, and we are proud that the work we do helps other people in a situation we once were in. Having a love for homes and a genuine passion for helping others, my daughter and I can’t believe this is our career – it is a dream come true for us!
When we are working with clients, our top priority is giving them options, so they never feel pressured to make a decision. We believe that it is always possible to find the right home for the right price; it just takes a little patience. By offering rentals for our relocation clients, we remove the urgency behind buying so you can wait for the perfect home. For our sellers, we take a similar approach, working within your desired timeline and creating a seamless experience, marketing your home and preparing it to help achieve top dollar. When the transaction is over, we will continue supporting you as your REALTORS® for life.
